Lavender House Perfumery was founded in 1991 by Louis and Francis Mamo, who were passionate about products inspired by the power of nature. Rowella in the beautiful Tamar Valley, was Louis’ childhood home and the business was built in the countryside that he loved so much. In 2018 we took over the business, replanting the lavender fields with new varieties of lavender, and introducing Turkish, French and Heirloom Roses. We have honoured the Mamo’s beautiful legacy, whilst expanding our artisanal botanical craftsmanship for a nationwide and global community.
It’s not been an easy journey: Louis passed away whilst we were in the process of purchasing the business and I had a very unexpected and near deadly cancer diagnosis, which slowed our progress somewhat. And then came Covid.
As they say, every problem presents an opportunity. Which is at the very least stretching a point. However, over the past eight years we have become renowned Australian Makers with a passionate global following. Just as well we have decades of international experience in Business, Horticulture, Writing and Product Manufacture behind us.

Preserving the Heritage and Expanding our Estate

Besides cultivating organically grown English Lavender we have expanded our gardens to include many other varieties and cultivars of Lavender. These include, Intermedias, French, Stoechas and Spanish. We even have a green lavender! Whilst these are not used in our products, they have a longer growing and flowering season than English Lavender, so provide colour and texture in our gardens most months of the year. We are also growing some varieties of English Lavender at our other site, that prefer cooler temperatures.

And Now there are Roses

Growing lavender in Rowella, has been problematic to say the least. Whilst there are areas on our estate where lavender will happily thrive, we also have areas of clay which is drains poorly and spells instant death to lavender. Which is why we decided to expand our growing fields to include Turkish, heirloom French and English Roses.

We cultivate specific varieties that thrive in our cool Tasmanian climate, allowing us to produce a unique range of world class skincare products.

To capture the true essence of our roses, we use enfleurage. This is a highly specialised and time honoured French technique of scent extraction. The original French enfleurage method captured floral essence using duck fat. However we love ducks and instead have developed our own proprietary method of extracting scent using specialised oils, butters and waxes. Our process allows us to gently extract the natural scents and therapeutic properties of the rose petals without using heat, steam  or chemicals. Our commitment ensures an authentic and unique botanical experience that sets us apart on the world stage.

As well as our thriving retail and global e-commerce operations Lavender House Perfumery remains a celebrated Tasmanian Tourism destination. Visitors from around the world travel to our estate to view our vibrant gardens, witness our traditional methods, smell our roses and lavender and experience our creations at their source. We use Tasmanian Beeswax and Tasmanian Australian oils and extracts in our products. We also proudly prepare every worldwide shipment on our estate beore we send them to you.
